Heavy equipment, helicopters deployed to Lower Campbell Creek fire near Beaverdell

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says a wildfire burning off Highway 33 near Beaverdell has seen minor growth but continues to burn out of control.

The Lower Campbell Creek wildfire is estimated at 223 hectares, according to the last update provided by the BCWS at 9 pm on Thursday.

Seven pieces of heavy equipment were deployed to the fire on Thursday.

“Their objectives were to assess possible locations for machine guard around the perimeter of the fire,” the BCWS says.

A helicopter was also deployed to bucket water onto hotspots throughout the day.

Rank two and three fire behaviour continued to be observed on Thursday, the BCWS says.

That means “the fire had visible open flame, occasional candling, and a slow to moderate rate of spread.”

According to the RDKB, the weather remained favourable for fire fighting but the forecast was calling for isolated lightning Thursday evening.

Five properties in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary remain on evacuation alert.
