‘Large party’ at Okanagan home results in COVID-19 fines for 2 people

A Thursday night shindig in the North Okanagan resulted in a pair of fines after police were called to the residence.

The Vernon RCMP said it was called to the “large party” around 11:30 pm on Thursday and saw “numerous people inside the residence” and others on the balcony when they arrived.

As officers approached the home, the partygoers quickly disappeared inside and refused to answer the door.

“It’s disappointing to see people taking part in these high-risk activities, blatantly disregarding the direction of the provincial health officer,” said Cst. Chris Terleski.

“We believe the community overwhelmingly understands and supports the necessary measures that have been implemented to slow the spread of COVID-19.”

A pair of people who were onsite were fined an undisclosed amount under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act and the incident remains under investigation at this time.

The Vernon RCMP said it’s primary focus surrounding COVID-19 regulations is “education and awareness,” but fines will be used if the public chooses to disobey health-authority mandates.
