Alberta man arrested in the Okanagan after skipped dinner bill leads to dangerous chase with police

An Alberta man is in custody after leading police on a chase through downtown Vernon on Monday.

According to police, at approximately 1:15 pm, a restaurant in the 3600 block of 32nd Street reported that a man had left the building without paying for his meal.

As police responded to the first call, complaints were received that a person, who matched the same description as the suspect in the previous incident, had stolen from their business on the 3200 block of the same street. While in the area, officers located the suspect vehicle in the 3300 block of 31st Avenue.

As police attempted to place the driver under arrest, he ignored commands and proceeded to flee in the vehicle.

"The man crashed into two police vehicles and one civilian vehicle, narrowly missing two of our officers, while attempting to evade police," stated Constable Chris Terleski. "When his vehicle became disabled, the man ran from the vehicle and our officers pursued the suspect on foot."

The suspect entered a business in the 3300 block of 30th Avenue where he was contained by police and arrested without further incident.

A 31-year-old man faces a number of criminal charges including theft, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police. The man was also issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

At this point, he remains in police custody as he waits for his court appearance. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
