(UPDATE: Jan. 11 @ 6 pm) - The Coquihalla (Hwy 5) has been added to the rainfall warning issued earlier today.
Hwy 3 and Hwy 5 are now both expected to be hit hard by rain over the next 24 hours as an atmospheric river makes it way east from the coast.
Environment Canada predicts the routes will receive 50-70 mm of rain.
(Original story: Jan. 11 @ 9 am) - The recently-repaired Hwy 3 will receive a bit of a stress test over the next two days.
The stretch of highway between Hope and Princeton reopened just over two weeks ago after being damaged in several spots during a series of atmospheric river storms in December.
Damage was so significant in one area that the highway has an “interim alignment” in that spot until long-term repairs can be made.

Unfortunately, that highway is expected to be pounded by rain again over the next couple of days and it’s triggered an alert from Environment Canada.
The agency is calling for 50-70 mm of rain to hit Hwy 3 around the areas of the Hope Slide and Sunshine Valley.
There will be periods of light rain today, but “the main brunt of moisture” will arrive tonight and tomorrow before easing later Monday evening.
Environment Canada warns that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas, and visibility could be “suddenly reduced” at times.
