July is a month chock-full of endurance sports events for Penticton and is sure to be a busy time for the community.
The Okanagan Granfondo mass cycling event will kick things off on Sunday, July 10. About 3,000 cyclists are expected to show up for the event.
Residents can anticipate several road closures throughout Penticton and outlying areas from Saturday, July 9 at 5 am until Sunday, July 10 at 5 pm.
No parking will be available on Lakeshore Drive on the morning of July 9.
There will be a wide variety of activities, races for the kids and of course the main attraction, the Granfondo race.
The schedule will look like this:
Piccolo Fondo (kids’ race) – Saturday, July 9, from 9-11 am at Rotary Park
Granfondo race – Sunday, July 10, starting at 6:30 am near Lakeshore Drive and Gyro Park.
The early start time is intended to minimize traffic disruptions. Cyclists will work their way through downtown Penticton along Main Street, Riverside Drive, Martin Steet, Westminster Avenue, South Main Street as well as other local streets.
Parents are invited to register their kids (up to age 12) for the free Piccolo Fondo race Saturday morning, which will be held along Lakeshore Drive.
The race will wrap up with festivities at Gyro Park on July 10. There will be a family fun zone, beverage garden and barbecue.
These festivities will be open to the public from 11 am to 5 pm, so bring the family down and for a fun-day Sunday.
