Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, has announced that he will resign from leadership of the party as soon as an interim leader can be appointed.
Singh gave an emotional speech tonight following a loss in his riding of Burnaby Central.
He addressed a crowd to thank them for their support and to announce the news.
“Obviously, I know this night is a disappointing night for New Democrats,” he said.
“We are only defeated if we stop fighting. We are only defeated when we believe those who tell us that we can never dream of a better Canada —of a fair Canada, of a more compassionate Canada.”
Singh expressed during his speech that he would have to “avoid making eye contact” with certain people in the audience to avoid getting too emotional.
“Almost eight years ago I was elected the leader of this incredible party, this incredible movement. I worked really hard to be worthy of this trust, to live up to the legacy of our movement.”
