Police have confirmed that a single-vehicle crash that closed the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) west of Kamloops late Sunday afternoon was fatal.
Emergency crews were called to the scene of the crash near Savona around 4:30 pm.
An initial investigation indicates that a eastbound pickup truck with two women inside left the highway and struck the ditch.
The impact led to the driver overcorrecting, police explained, at which point the truck rolled over and slid into the ditch on the other side of the highway.
Both occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and firefighters assisted with extraction, but the driver was sadly declared dead at the scene.
The passenger was taken to hospital with what the RCMP says are serious injuries that are believed to be life-threatening.
Police did not identify the two occupants of the pickup, but said they were both from Port Coquitlam.
The RCMP, BC Highway Patrol and BC Coroners Service are all investigating the fatal crash.
Anyone who witnessed the incident and has yet to speak with police is urged to contact the Tk’emlups Rural RCMP at 250-314-1800.
