1 in 3 Canadians between the ages of 35 and 64 aren’t getting enough sleep

Recent research from Statistics Canada shows that many Canadian adults aren’t getting enough sleep.

The data shows that one in four adults between ages 18-34 and ages 65-79 aren’t getting enough sleep.

Between those two figures, from ages 35-64, it’s one in three adults that aren’t getting the proper amount of rest at night.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, anyone between the ages of 18-64 should be getting seven and nine hours of sleep at night.

In addition, StatsCan found that one in two adults have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep, while one in three have difficulty staying awake during the daytime.

A lack of sleep can lead to chronic stress and poor mental health.

Stress-wise, 36.3% of adults who aren’t getting sufficient sleep report having chronic stress compared to just 23.2% of adults who do get adequate rest.

Poor mental health is reported by 12.3% of adults who aren’t sleeping enough, while just 5.8% of those who do report the same tihing.

Part of StatsCan’s publication regarding getting an adequate amount of rest is encouraging good sleep hygiene, which includes:

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine before bed
  • Maintain a regular bedtime/waketime
  • Practice relaxation and mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques
  • Reduce noise in the sleeping environment
  • Exercise regularly
  • Review medications with your physician/pharmacist regularly
