Couple stranded near Oyama Lake rescued 'within minutes'

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) has praised a couple that got lost near Oyama Lake.

The duo did “exactly what search teams hope for,” COSAR said in a social media post.

They were found “within minutes” and the rescue operation was a “straightforward extraction.”

COSAR was called to assist in the rescue on Sunday evening after two people became stranded on Oyama Lake Forest Service Road.

Seven rescuers, a snowmobile and a UTV were dispatched to help the couple, who had stayed in their vehicle.

“They were unhurt from their ordeal,” the post reads.

COSAR said it has noticed an increase in people getting stuck in the backcountry.

COSAR’s search manager, Duane Tresnich, said in the post that people heading into the bush should “carry ways to dig yourself out, have ways to start a fire if you can’t get out, bring food and water and most importantly, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back.”

He added: “That way if something unexpected happens, Search and Rescue teams with have a starting point to come and find you.”
