Weather this week: Snow in Northern B.C., Hurricane Florence making landfall

The month of September brings a lot of change - the kids are back at school, days are getting shorter, and now snow is falling in parts of BC!

There are snowfall warnings in place for the northeastern corner of our province as cold arctic air moves into parts of the BC Peace today and tonight. Some of the Northern BC highways will see near 10cm of snow over the next 24 hours.

Here’s a look at Hwy 97, about 80 km north-west of Fort Nelson this morning.

As the cooler air reaches Southern BC Thursday night, high elevations in our region may also see slight snow when freezing levels drop down to near 2000m.

In other weather news, Hurricane Florence is impacting the US East Coast. With maximum sustained winds this morning of 195km/h, this storm is now a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

Expect to make landfall late Thursday or Friday morning, a dangerous storm serge is likely for the coastal sections of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

Flooding will also be an issue from a heavy rainfall event when the storm approaches the coast. Strong damaging winds are also in the forecast starting Wednesday night.

Mandatory evacuations are currently in place for over one million people.
