It’s that time of year again!
Forecasters are warning about potential snow on high-elevation highway passes, particularly the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C), over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement about the “highly variable” conditions and the possible accumulation of 2-10 centimetres of snow on mountain pass routes.
“A cold front moving through the Interior of British Columbia will begin to drop temperatures Saturday afternoon,” Environment Canada explains.
“Rapid cooling over the Interior combined with moisture from an upper lower moving through Washington is likely to give snow over the high elevation highway passes.”
The chillier weather will certainly be noticeable at lower elevations, as most BC Interior communities are looking at highs in the single digits on Sunday and overnight lows around freezing throughout the long weekend.
The change in conditions and potential snowfall at higher elevations is expected to begin Saturday afternoon and possibly extend into Thanksgiving Monday.
“Snow may rapidly accumulate on roads and visibility may be greatly reduced leading to difficult travel conditions,” the Environment Canada alerts adds.
Long weekend travellers are urged to monitor for rapidly changing weather conditions and check DriveBC for the latest on highway conditions and closure.
