Headlines beyond the hockey world were made earlier this week when video surfaced of a number of Ottawa Senators players’ Uber trip in Arizona.
The video showed the players bad mouthing the team’s assistant coach, Martin Raymond, while in the car.
Thomas Chabot, Dylan DeMelo, Matt Duchene, Alex Formenton, Chris Tierney, Chris Wideman and Colin White are all in the vehicle, although not all of them talk during the video.
Unsurprisingly, the video went viral once it was made public, but the team is now demanding that the Ottawa Citizen, who originally published the video, remove it from their website.
In a letter to the newspaper, team lawyers said the video was posted despite the fact that it was secretly recorded, violating the players’ privacy.
Not only that, but the letter argued that the video doesn’t involve a matter of “genuine public interest," yet it remains on the website and the Ottawa Citizen's YouTube page.
Senators COO, Nicolas Ruszkowski, called the video “voyeuristic journalism” and said the team wants to ensure people’s reputations aren’t ruined by it.
The Ottawa Citizen didn’t respond to a Canadian Press request for comment, nor did the parent company Postmedia Network Inc.
