A group of local Kelowna and Vernon curlers will represent BC at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier after brushing off the tournament competition in Quesnel.
Kelowna and Vernon’s Team Cotter chiseled their names into the BC curling history books Sunday morning with a commanding victory over Victoria Curling Club’s Team Montgomery in the final match of the 2019 BC Men’s Curling Championship.
Jim Cotter was one of the five men representing Vernon and Kelowna Curling Clubs in Team Cotter, who earned the title of BC Men’s Champions at the West Fraser Centre following their 9-4 win.
Team Cotter, comprised of the third, Steve Laycock, second Tyrel Griffith, lead Rick Sawatsky and fifth Brad Wood, was unstoppable during the tournament The team finished without a loss throughout the entire championship event.

“Team Montgomery, they’re a fabulous team,” said Cotter about his final win against Victoria's Club. “We knew they’d be coming on full force.”
The victory marks the eighth BC Men’s Championship title for Cotter and Sawatsky, and a sixth championship for Griffith.
Laycock has made an appearance at the Tim Hortons Brier numerous times wearing the western Red Lily for Saskatchewan, this is his first time that he has won the BC Championship.
“Probably our strongest thing is our team bond, it’s just remarkable,” said Cotter. “We’re really close on and off the ice and I think that that’s what brings success.”
The quintet will make their rocks sing in Brandon, Man. at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier from March 2 to 10.
