Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2025 class includes BC junior stars, former Canuck

The Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) has announced its class of 2025.

The eight-member class includes six players and a pair of builders, and British Columbia is represented quite well.

In what many hockey fans would call a move that’s long overdue, Russian winger Alexander Mogilny will finally be inducted into the HHOF later this year.

Mogilny played with the Vancouver Canucks between 1995 and 2000, scoring 139 goals and recording 308 points in 312 regular season games.

He was traded to the New Jersey Devils at the 2000 trade deadline, with Brendan Morrison highlighting the return package, and won a Stanley Cup with his new club just a few months later.

Mogilny finished his career with 473 goals and 1,032 points in 990 games, adding 39 goals and 86 points in 124 career playoff games, and won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2003.

Joining Mogilny in the HHOF’s 2025 class are a pair of players who played their junior hockey in British Columbia in Duncan Keith and Zdeno Chara.

Keith spent two seasons patrolling the blue line for the BCHL’s Penticton Panthers between 1999 and 2001, then returned to BC to play for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets after a brief college career at Michigan State.

Although he only played half a season with the Rockets, Keith registered 46 points in 37 regular season games and was a key factor in the playoffs as Kelowna won the WHL title.

The Manitoba native went on to win three Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks, a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP during the team’s 2015 run and the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman twice.

Chara also won the Norris Trophy during his illustrious career and captained his Boston Bruins to a Stanley Cup victory in 2011, a championship Canucks fans will remember well but rather forget.

The 6’9” Slovakian defenseman spent the majority of his career with the Bruins, but also played some of his whopping 1,880 regular season and playoff games with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals.

Before his long professional career, Chara spent his first year in North American playing for the WHL's Prince George Cougars, notching 30 points and 165 penalty minutes in 64 total games.

Along with these three players with BC connections, Joe Thornton is another legendary NHL player who will be joining the HHOF later this year.

The other two players set to be inducted are both powerhouses from the women’s game, as Jennifer Botterill and Brianna Decker received the call from the Hall.

The final two members from the class of 2025 are in the Builder Category – Jack Parker and Danièle Sauvageau.

“The HHOF is proud to welcome these hockey legends as Honoured Members,” said HHOF chair Ron Francis. “Their contributions to the game of hockey are well documented and their election to the HHOF is richly deserved.”

All eight inductees will officially be enshrined into the HHOF at a celebration event on Monday, Nov. 10, in Toronto.
