The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has been busy with a sudden rise in wildfires across the province over the past week.
According to the BCWS, there were 4,382 lightning strikes across the province on Friday and Saturday, with the Cariboo and Coastal regions being the most affected.
The lightning strikes, coupled with above-seasonal temperatures across the province, have helped create 144 new wildfires over the past seven days.
While there has been a sudden spike in fires, 57 of those new blazes are now out and nearly all of them are one hectare in size or smaller.
Of the 44 new fires spotted in the past 24 hours, only three are more than a hectare in size.
“Hot and dry conditions with light winds are expected today and tomorrow,” wrote the service.
“Lightning may develop in the Coastal, southern Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centre areas, with the greatest risk in the south tomorrow. Despite the very dry fine fuels, we are not seeing rapid wildfire growth upon ignition due to light winds.”
