West Kelowna’s Super Roller Disco event is on Saturday, June 17.
The traveling roller disco, launched by Vernon’s Anna Hyett, has an atmosphere similar to a nightclub, with disco lights, a fog machine and music from DJ Miss Demeanour.
When Hyett turned 40, she couldn’t afford a sports car, so she bought a pair of roller skates instead.
“I instantly fell in love with it,” she told NowMedia.
“When I’m skating around, everyone says, ‘Oh, that’s so awesome, I remember doing this,’ and they have a moment of nostalgia and it brings them joy just having that memory.”
As someone who has always had a desire to travel, Hyett came up with the idea to organize roller skating events in different cities.
So far, the Super Roller Disco has been warmly welcomed in Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Merritt.
Every event is designed to bring the community together in an inclusive space.
“I want mom and dad and their three kids to come, I want the girls from work to come and I want couples to come out on dates,” Hyett explained.
West Kelowna’s event will take place at Royal LePage Place from 8 to 11 pm, and doors will open at 7:30 pm.
There is a $15 entry fee, which can be paid at the door with cash or debit.
Roller skate rentals are $5, but attendees are welcome to bring their own.
The Super Roller Disco is on a first come, first served basis.
