West Kelowna RCMP say pair of fires may be linked to fireworks

The West Kelowna RCMP are investigating a pair of fires that started in the Smith Creek area on Wednesday.

The first fire was reported around 11 am near Smith Creek Road and Dixie Road.

A second one was reported around 3 pm about 500 metres away from the first fire.

Local firefighters and crews with the BC Wildfire Service responded with ground crews and helicopters.

Fortunately, the fires were quickly contained and no injuries were reported and no evacuations were needed.

“Due to close proximity, the second wildfire is believed to be related to the first one,” the RCMP said in a news release.

The West Kelowna RCMP are working with the Ministry of Forests Compliance and Enforcement Branch to investigate what caused the fires.

At this point it is believed they may be connected to fireworks.

According to the news release, people driving a UTV were reportedly seen discharging fireworks in the area Tuesday evening.

Police said they have since located the vehicle and the investigation is ongoing.

“The West Kelowna RCMP reminds the public to exercise caution and responsibility during summer activities and are encouraged to avoid engaging in any behaviour that could potentially cause a risk to the public, property, or environment — particularly actions that may lead to wildfires,” police said in the release.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact the RCMP at (250) 768-2880 and refer to file 2025-47891 or 2025-47956.
