VIDEO: Homeowner points to a battery charger as the cause of devastating house fire

(UPDATE: Feb. 24 @ 4:30 pm) - The structure fire on Ogden Road has been noted as "not suspicious" in nature, according to West Kelowna Fire Rescue.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

(Original Story Feb. 23 @ 4 pm): - "My house is burning," said an emotional Carey Rivard.

Rivard spoke to KelownaNow as fire spread through his home on Ogden Road in the Lakeview Heights neighbourhood of West Kelowna.

He and his wife were watching TV when they smelled smoke.

Rivard's worst fears were realized when he got to the garage.

A battery he had left charging was on fire along with a trailer.

From there, the fire quickly spread into the master bedroom which is above the garage.

"We called 911 and got out, and that's the effects," he said, gesturing to the house.

"Everything we own is in that house."

Rivard could only watch as a brand-new Corvette was destroyed along with his wife's car.

By the time crews arrived on the scene around 11:30, they had a fight on their hands.

"We're chasing the fire in a number of places," said West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund.

"We have a very strong North Wind," he added. "Which is driving the fire."

As for the cause, they aren't ready to confirm anything about the battery charger just yet.

"Our investigators are here. We don't have a cause yet," said Brolund.

"We'll be looking at all angles. Of course, being a garage there's many sources of head and ignition that could be present there."

Rivard could only watch as the fire spread from the garage to the main part of the house.

"It really sucks," he said.

He's just thankful that he and his wife escaped without injury.

"Yeah," he said. "We got out good that way."
