UPDATE: Fire in West Kelowna this morning caused by heat lamp in turkey outbuilding

(UPDATE: June 1 @ 9:49 am): A fire in West Kelowna early this morning was caused by a heat lamp in an outbuilding where turkeys were being reared, firefighters have confirmed.

The lamp ignited wood on the floor of the building and set off the blaze.

The building was lost in the fire, along with six adult turkeys and 20 chicks, Fire Chief Jason Brolund said.

"The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution with all sources of heat, particularly those that are left unattended," he added.

"These types of heaters should be secured to a solid surface and kept away from things that can burn, high traffic areas, and doorways. They should be checked on a regular basis."

(Original story: June 1 @ 5:23 am): West Kelowna firefighters put out a blaze in the early hours of this morning.

They were told of a fire in the West Kelowna Estates neighbourhood at about 3 am.

It was an outbuilding on Griffiths Place, which firefighters said was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was spreading to nearby trees and threatened to spread to the main home on the property, the first responders said.

Firefighters contained the blaze at the outbuilding, which was lost.

There were no injuries and no cause has yet been determined.

“West Kelowna Fire Rescue reminds the public to review the FireSmart principles available from firesmart.ca,” firefighters explained.

“The neighbourhood of West Kelowna Estates is an example of wildland-urban interface zone. Homes are closely spaced, many with combustible roofing and siding materials. Trees are nestled close to buildings.

“There are steps residents can take now, before a fire impacts their home. The City of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation are offering $500 grants to residents who undertake FireSmart projects.”
