Amanda Cawley, a name that resonates with those familiar with the world of film scoring and orchestral compositions, began her musical journey at the tender age of eight. Her story, one of passion and perseverance, is a testament to the power of following one's dreams.
Amanda's early love for music was nurtured in a household filled with the sounds of David Bowie, Kate Bush, and Pink Floyd. Her father, though not a musician himself, played a pivotal role in encouraging her musical aspirations. At just 12 years old, Amanda recorded her first album, with her father running XLR cables through their home to the piano, transforming their house into a makeshift studio.
"I was lucky that I always knew music was what I wanted to pursue," Amanda recalls. This early clarity of purpose led her to study classical piano at the University of Victoria and contemporary music at Selkirk College in Nelson. Her academic journey provided her with a strong foundation, but it was her drive and emotional connection to music that truly set her apart.
A significant influence on Amanda's development was her piano teacher, Stephanie Chappelle, who taught her to infuse emotion and personal voice into her performances. "I was always really drawn to the Romantic era, where there's a bit more freedom," Amanda says. This early training in storytelling through music laid the groundwork for her future career in film composing.
Amanda's transition into film composing was a natural progression from her love of orchestral music and storytelling. "I was always drawn to composing for media and being part of storytelling through music," she explains. Her compositions are characterized by their emotional depth and cinematic quality, qualities that have made her a sought-after composer in the film industry.
Throughout her career, Amanda has worn many hats within the music industry. From teaching and wedding DJing to live gigging and composing, she has done it all. This diverse experience has not only honed her skills but also provided her with a comprehensive understanding of the music industry. "I did every job in music," she notes. "I didn't want to do any job outside of music, but I did everything in music."
One of Amanda's most gratifying experiences was recording with a 30-piece orchestra and 20-piece choir in Athens. "It was just like a 'whoa' moment," she says, reflecting on the experience of hearing her compositions brought to life by real instruments. This opportunity was a highlight in her career, reaffirming her love for working with live orchestras.
Despite the challenges of working on tight budgets and timelines, Amanda's passion for music remains undiminished. She continues to compose for episodic TV series and other media projects, bringing her unique voice and emotional depth to every piece she creates.
In addition to her professional achievements, Amanda's personal life is also filled with music. She and her husband, Tyler, started a band called Telosia during the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a fun project to stay connected and creative during the lockdown has grown into a serious musical endeavour. The band recorded an album with producer Jordan Chase, who Amanda credits with helping elevate their sound.
Amanda and Tyler are also expecting their first child, adding another layer of excitement and creativity to their lives. "We've got our first baby on the way right now," Amanda shares, her joy evident.
Amanda Cawley's journey from recording her first album in her bedroom to composing for film and recording with orchestras is a testament to her talent, hard work, and passion for music. Her story is an inspiration to young musicians and composers, demonstrating that with dedication and a love for the craft, dreams can indeed become reality.
