The Kelowna Fire Department has broken the gender barrier.

The first full-time female structural firefighter ever hired in the city starts training today.

It comes as a result of a strong applicant and a commitment to diversify.

Chief Travis Whiting admits it's taken too long, but he's proud this moment has come.

He and City of Kelowna Human Resources Director Stu Leatherdale stopped by KelownaNow to talk about what it means for the fire department, the city and to young women who might now see a future as firefighters.
