VIDEO: It's Valentines day tomorrow so don't blow it this time

"If you're going to get flowers," said relationship counselor Barb Egan, "Don't then ditch her. Spend some time."

Egan spent some time with KelownaNow ahead of one day we set aside each year to celebrate love.

Egan likes Valentines Day because it gives us a special incentive to celebrate the most important relationships in our lives. She said people should take advantage of it. "To show them that I love them in a really unique, healthy, special, personalized way."

Egan also confirmed that people, even relationship counselors can be complicated. She admits that after having told her spouse she didn't want flowers and chocolate, she was glad he ignored that. "He still got it for me," she said, "and I really appreciated it."

Egan said the best way to make a gift personal is in the note that comes with it. "A hand written note can go a long ways," she said. "Just to show someone that you're thinking of them, that you care about them and that they matter to you."

A specific suggestion for a last minute gift would be an invitation to attend a table talk at Third Space Coffee that's she's hosting next week with Jeff Hay that's all about making loving relationships better. It's entitled: 'The 5 Love Languages'.

The most important message about a day like Valentines Day, said Egan, is that it's about time. "The most important thing is just to spend time with your significant other."
