Cyclist hit by car and killed in the Okanagan

A man who was hit by a vehicle while biking in Vernon late last week has died from his injuries in hospital.

The fatal collision happened around 4 pm on Friday near the intersection of Kalamalka Lake Road and Pottery Road.

According to police, the 52-year-old cyclist was trying to cross Kalamalka Lake Road “through heavy traffic and between intersections” when it happened.

Unfortunately, the Vernon man was hit by a small Jeep SUV driving northbound and was launched from his bike.

Emergency crews arrived on scene and the cyclist was rushed to hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The RCMP said that the driver of the Jeep remained on scene and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

“Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family and all those who witnessed this tragic event,” said Cst. Chris Terleski.

“Thank you to all of those who remained on scene and attempted to provide life-saving assistance to the victim.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and no further information will be released by police at this time.
