Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada is home to the breathtaking Maligne Canyon, a natural wonder that attracts visitors year-round. During the winter months, the Maligne Canyon transforms into a frozen wonderland, offering a unique opportunity to explore its beauty on foot through an exhilarating ice walk.

The Maligne Canyon Ice Walk is a guided tour that takes visitors along the frozen canyon floor, past towering frozen waterfalls and along narrow icy pathways. With the help of ice cleats and a knowledgeable guide, visitors can safely navigate the frozen terrain while marveling at the stunning ice formations that surround them.

Often, beginner and intermediate ice climbers can be found scaling the two famous ice features that form from the canyon’s top to floor, The Queen, and The Angel.

Lunch at the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen is included in your tour, and trust me, having dined here a couple of times, this is one of the best parts! The Maligne Canyon Ice Walk is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Jasper National Park during the winter season.

Pyramid Lake is Jasper National Park’s stunning glacial lake snuggled in beside the Pyramid Lake Resort. It is surrounded by picturesque mountain peaks and lush forests, making it a popular destination for visitors to the area. The lake is known for its crystal clear waters, which reflect the surrounding mountains and create a serene and peaceful atmosphere. This makes it especially fascinating to skate on during the winter months. A track is plowed around the lake, as well as a larger area for skating and playing hockey.

In summer, Pyramid Lake offers a variety of recreational activities, such as fishing, canoeing, hiking, and e-bike rentals. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore, rent a canoe to explore the waters, or hike to one of the nearby viewpoints to take in the breathtaking views. In winter, this lake provides a family-friendly option for enjoying the snow-capped mountain view, hot chocolate from the visitor center and a chance to sit around the fire with a s’mores kit when your feet get tired. Skates and hockey gear are available to rent at the lake.

Jasper National Park is home to a thriving elk population, and during the winter months, visitors to the park have a unique opportunity to observe these majestic animals up close. The colder temperatures and snow-covered landscape create a unique environment for the elk, and visitors may witness large herds grazing in the valley bottoms or foraging for food in the forested areas. The elk are often seen near the town of Jasper, where they take advantage of the lower elevations and milder weather.

I recommend staying at the newly renovated Forest Park Hotel for observing the popular herd. We fondly watched as they grazed right outside the hotel windows and raced each other on the hill beside the train.

While observing the elk, it is important to maintain a safe distance, as these are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Visitors can learn more about the elk and their habitat by visiting one of the many interpretive centers located throughout the park. Witnessing the elk in their winter habitat is a truly unforgettable experience and a highlight of any trip to Jasper National Park.
