Want to modernize your home? Here's some tips

Just like our eating habits, people are desiring organic and natural products in their home decor. Luckily, the trends in interior design are leaning towards natural, organic and ethically sourced products aswell.

Here are a few tips to modernize your space for spring.

Woven

Number one on the the list and number one in our hearts this spring is anything woven! Whether it’s rattan, cotton or seagrass, you can never have to many woven baskets.

They’re good for plants, storing extra pillows and blankets or hiding junk.

You can also think wall decor, bowls, accent chairs and my favourite, pendant lights!

Look for companies that team up with ethically sourced brands like Kazi Goods and The Little Market.

Modern Clay & Ceramics

These aren’t the glossy, green, brown and maroon hand-me-downs from the 70’s. Look for pottery that has contemporary colours (think white, cream and grey) and modern lines.

Adding in the earthiness of clay gives an organic element to your style, look for pieces while on vacation or at a local pottery studio. Display different sized vases or a bowl for an earthy element.

Embellishments

What was once old, is new again! You’ll notice a lot of tassels and fringe not only in fashion but home decor too! Blankets, pillows, table runners, and baskets oh my!

You’re also going to see more macrame. If you live in a home built in the 70’s or 80’s, you’ve probably filled lots of holes in the ceilings, left over from hanging planters. Well, they’re back!

If you’re not wanting to put those holes back in your ceiling but you want to add in the texture of macrame, look for wall hangings or even pillows. Check out The Makery Kelowna for locally made goods!

Fabric Prints

If you keep the majority of your space neutral then it’s easy to add in prints like these batik and ikat from Shoppe Amber Interiors or embroidered Turkish & mudcoth pillows from Rug & Weave.

Wood

I don’t know if there is anything more natural and organic feeling than wood. If you’re going for a California coastal modern you can incorporate drift wood or a tree stump for an end table. If your style is more refined, try some wooden bowls or display some wooden cutting boards against your backsplash.

No matter what your into, modernizing your space can be fun and affordable.
