Section of Hwy 3 closed due to high avalanche risk

Heavy snow has caused a closure on a section of Highway 3 through the Kootenays.

DriveBC says the highway is closed in both directions through the Kootenay Pass due to high avalanche risk.

The closure stretches about 18 kilometres.

An alternate route is available through Nelson to Creston, Highway 3A and over the Kootenay Lake Ferry.

That detour can add about two and half hours onto travel time, says DriveBC.

An assessment is in progress with the next update anticipated at 3 pm.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Highway 3 from the Paulson Summit through to the Kootenay Pass.

Be sure to keep an eye on DriveBC if you plan on travelling this route.

NowMedia staff will update this story if anything changes earlier in the day.
