A 30-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting several employees at a Canadian Tire in Vancouver during an attempted robbery on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Brandon Samuel Valleau has been charged with robbery, assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and breaching of release order.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says officers responded to the Canadian Tire near Marine Drive and Ontario Street around 3 pm after receiving a 911 call about the “violent assault.”

“Police believe a man entered the store around 2:45 pm and attempted to steal several hundred dollars in merchandise, including a metal baseball bat,” explained a VPD release.

“When a staff member attempted to stop him, the suspect allegedly struck the worker multiple times with the bat.”

The VPD notes that staff members who chased the suspect as he tried to flee were also assaulted. Witnesses helped VPD officers take Valleau into custody.

He remains in custody today and is awaiting a bail hearing. The retail worker who was attacked with a bat sustained serious injuries to the head and face that required hospitalization.
