Sparks fly as another highway overpass is struck in BC

British Columbia continues to have issues with commercial vehicles striking highway overpasses.

The latest such incident happened around 7:30 am today in Delta. The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says a garbage truck struck the 112 Street overpass while travelling northbound on Hwy 99.

Video of the alleged incident has surfaced on social media, showing that the garbage truck’s forks were vertical while in transit and those are what hit the overpass.

According to the BCHP, the garbage truck did not stop at the scene.

“Whenever a driver is involved in a collision with an overpass, no matter how minor, there is an obligation to report the incident,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

McLaughlin noted that the BCHP is working with its partners at Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement to follow up with the driver and company.

Fortunately, the damage to the overpass is not believed to be severe and the strike did not disrupt traffic on Hwy 99 this morning.
