Peavey Mart has warned that scammers are trying to take advantage of the firm’s closing-down sale.
According to the beleaguered hardware company – which announced late last month it was going out of business – fraudsters have created imitation websites with similar URLs designed to steal cash from unsuspecting bargain-hunters.
Summerland RCMP is among the police detachments across British Columbia to raise the alarm about the scam, urging the public “not to click on any links received from an unknown number, and to be wary of clicking on sites that pop up on social media.”
The Mounties explained: “The scam involves fake websites and social media accounts that appear very similar to the actual Peavey Mart website. The fake sites offer products at 90 per cent off and more, and provide free shipping on all orders.”
Peavey Mart itself published the following guide on its website:
Our official website is peaveymart.com, but it is not accepting orders.
Our liquidation sales are in-store only.
We will never ask for credit card payments online/phone.
The store added: “Please be cautious and verify sources before engaging with any online offers. If a website is not peaveymart.com, it is NOT our website. Similarly, if a social media page does not carry the verified 'Peavey Mart' name and checkmark, it is NOT affiliated with us.”
