Some members of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) who work in the province’s public service will begin job action on Tuesday.
In a media release from the union, the BCGEU announced that members will begin walking picket lines in Victoria, Prince George and Surrey tomorrow.
The union’s president, Paul Finch, will be at the picket line in Victoria and is expected to deliver some remarks.
The BCGEU public service bargaining unit is one of the largest in BC and is made up of more than 34,000 members.
On Friday, the union issued a 72-hour strike notice after members overwhelmingly (92.7%) voted in favour of taking job action.
"Frontline workers in the public service are facing an affordability crisis that must be addressed in this round of negotiations," said bargaining chair and BCGEU president Paul Finch in a news release from Friday.
"Government's current offer doesn't meet the urgency of this crisis, and this emphatic strike vote result reflects workers' deep concern over the lack of progress at the bargaining table. Their message to government is clear: we are united and ready to act to secure a fair contract that keeps BC's public services strong."
A spring survey conducted by the BCGEU found that half of the union’s members are living paycheque to paycheque, while over 30% are relying on savings to pay living expenses.
A strike vote was called following a breakdown in negotiations between the union and the BC Public Service on July 18, 2025.
