While other municipalities are considering the move, North Vancouver is officially the first place in BC where people can enjoy an alcoholic beverage in a public space.
On Monday, city councillors officially passed a bylaw allowing for alcohol consumption in certain public spaces, such as parks and urban plazas.
Several city leaders across BC have advocated for the move in an effort to help local businesses bounce back from the COVID-19 imposed lockdown.
I’m pleased that Council passed a bylaw tonight to allow for the consumption of alcohol in certain public places including City parks!

This summer we need to find new ways to connect while distancing. This is just one way we’re working to make #NorthVan a city for people. https://t.co/NqZjVnqOaf
In North Van, alcohol consumption will be allowed in a number of designated public spaces, such as the public plaza at the Lonsdale Quay, between 11 am and 9 pm, seven days a week.
“When used in moderation, liquor consumption can be enjoyable for people and facilitate social interaction,” reads a report from city staff.
“This is an opportunity to provide informal, safe outdoor places for family and friends to socialize while supporting local businesses.”
While drinking in public will net you a hefty fine across the rest of the province, other BC cities like Penticton and Port Coquitlam are currently considering similar bylaws.
