Murderer dies in BC prison after spending 37 years behind bars

A convicted murderer has died in a British Columbia prison.

Eugene Raymond Benoit had been serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder since Feb. 28, 1987.

He died at the Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford on July 13.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said in a public notice that Benoit died of “apparent natural causes.”

The CSC will now investigate the circumstances of the death.

Police and the coroner will be notified, the notice explained.
