Police have arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a child who was playing outside a Victoria elementary school earlier this week.
The 21-year-old is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later today.
According to the RCMP, the incident is said to have happened between 5-6:30 pm Monday outside Eagle View Elementary in View Royal.
“A female child was playing in the yard when she was approached by an unknown male suspect, who exposed himself and touched the child in a sexual manner," an RCMP release explained.
The release notes that the child was able to “leave the area safely” and was physically unharmed.
“This is a deeply concerning incident and our investigators are working diligently to identify and locate the suspect,” explained Cpl. Nancy Saggar through a media release issued Wednesday.
Investigators canvassed the area this week for witnesses and video surveillance, and appealed to the public for assistance in Wednesday’s release.
This morning, police announced that a suspect had been arrested in connection to the incident.
Investigators are encouraging anyone with information on the alleged sexual assault to come forward to the West Shore RCMP by calling 250-474-2264.
That includes potential witnesses and anyone with relevant dash cam or surveillance footage from the area Monday evening.
To date, the RCMP has not received any similar reports of this nature from the area this week.
