The BC Conservation Service is investigating a resident in Chilliwack for hand-feeding a sow and its two cubs in a residential neighbourhood.
“As a direct result from this individual feeding the family unit of bears, the sow had to be destroyed, and the two cubs were taken to a rehabilitation centre so they can be relocated next spring,” stated a social media post from the service.
The post added that the investigation is ongoing and conservation officers were made aware of the situation by receiving information from the public.
The service also included a reminder in its post that feeding dangerous wildlife puts the overall public at risk.
“Feeding dangerous wildlife, such as bears, creates a serious public safety risk,” added the service.
“Wildlife fed by humans lose their sense of fear and associate people as a source to get food, as opposed to foraging for their natural nutrients.”
