Family lunch turns into million-dollar day for BC woman

Ying Chun Chen was out for an ordinary family lunch when her life started to change.

While eating, her son told her that someone in Abbotsford had won the Lotto 6/49 guaranteed $1-million prize for the March 6 draw.

The Abbotsford woman, who said she likes to pick her own numbers when playing Lotto 6/49 because “it’s fun and entertaining,” checked her ticket and realized she had won the $1-million.

“My whole family was with me when I found out: my husband, son and his wife,” Chen recalled. “They couldn’t believe that it was real.”

Chen says she hasn’t officially celebrated her monumental win yet, but is enjoying the newfound feeling of being a millionaire while carrying out some of her favourite daily pastimes like walking and puttering around at home.

She does, however, plan on using the prize money to purchase a new house in the future.

“It’s really exciting and I’m very grateful to be a winner,” she said. “It will change my life.”

Chen purchased the winning ticket at the Frescho on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford.
