Criminality not ruled out in fatal Hwy 1 crash that killed 29-year-old BC woman

Investigators say they cannot rule out criminality in a crash on Highway 1 that killed a 29-year-old woman.

On Thursday, around 6:50 pm, Hope and Agassiz RCMP were called to the scene of a crash on Hwy 1 near Laidlaw.

A white Hyundai SUV collided with a black Hyundai sedan in the westbound lanes of the highway.

The woman who was killed was a passenger in the black sedan, police said in a news release.

Two other passengers in the black sedan, along with the driver, received minor injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 65-year-old Agassiz man, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said RCMP officers from Hope and Agassiz responded immediately but the BC Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation because a criminal cause for the crash cannot be ruled out.

“We will need to investigate thoroughly, gather dash camera video, and speak to more witnesses to get a conclusive idea of what happened,” he said in the release

Anyone who may have video of what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash, or if you were driving in the area and saw cornering behaviour from either vehicle, call the BCHP’s Chilliwack detachment at (604) 702-4039.

The BCHP asks that potential witnesses quote file (1501) 2025-46642.
