BC youth, 12, struck and killed by teen driver while rollerblading with family

A youth has died following a tragic motor vehicle incident on Vancouver Island Monday night.

Police say the 12-year-old was rollerblading with family members in Shawnigan Lake around 8:30 pm Monday when they were struck by a vehicle.

A preliminary investigation found that a Honda Civic was travelling northbound in the 4100 block of Hillbank Road when it lost control and hit the youth before crashing into a telephone pole.

According to the RCMP, the driver and passenger in the vehicle, both 17 years old, were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“While we do not suspect that alcohol was involved, it has been determined that speed played an important factor in this tragic incident,” said Cpl. Alex Bérubé in a media release.

“The investigation remains in its early stages and police continue to gather evidence.

While Shawnigan Lake RCMP members were first on scene, the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and a collision analyst attended to assist with the probe into the fatal incident.
