A BC teacher has received a lifetime ban after being charged and pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor.
A consent agreement between the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation and the unnamed high school teacher was published on Nov. 28.
The teacher and school he worked at when the matter happened are not named in order to protect the identity of the student.
According to the agreement, the teacher was issued a teaching certificate in January 2019.
In 2021, the teacher signed an undertaking not to teach in any position and was suspended by the school he taught at.
According to the commissioner, the teacher entered into an inappropriately intimate, physical and sexualized relationship with a student in the same year.
The teacher was criminally charged with sexual offences pertaining to sexual exploitation of a minor, in respect to his conduct towards the student.
A year later, in 2022, the teacher pled guilty to one count of sexual exploitation and was sentenced to a conditional sentence of 24 months, followed by 36 months probation.
“The sentence included terms limiting the teacher’s ability to have contact with minors and an order the teacher remain on the National Sex offender Registry for 20 years. The remaining counts on the indictment were stayed,” says the consent agreement.
According to the commissioner, the teacher entered into the consent resolution agreement and admitted that his conduct constituted professional misconduct.
He also agrees that he will not apply for and be issued a teaching certificate.
The commissioner determined that a lifetime ban was appropriate due to the criminal misconduct which “undermines the public trust in the teaching profession,” the use of a position of power to exploit a minor and the violation of the student’s physical and emotional safety and wellbeing.
