BC police watchdog investigating after woman seriously hurt during e-scooter traffic stop

The police watchdog is investigating after a woman suffered potentially life-threatening injuries during an arrest.

The RCMP told the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) that the woman was riding an e-scooter along Columbia Avenue in Castlegar at about 11:40 pm on June 12.

An officer conducted a traffic stop on the woman and discovered an outstanding warrant for her arrest.

Police said that when the officer attempted to arrest the woman, “an interaction occurred.”

“The woman sustained a potentially life-threatening injury that was reportedly self-inflicted,” the IIO said.

Now the IIO will investigate what caused the woman’s injuries in an attempt to determine whether police action or inaction might have played a role.

Anyone with relevant information of the incident is asked to call the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
