BC man charged in relation to hit-and-run that claimed life of 17-year-old girl

A man is facing criminal charges after a fatal hit-and-run earlier this year claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl on Vancouver Island.

Crown Counsel has approved a charge of failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death against 28-year-old Ryan Mesa from the Cowichan Valley.

RCMP say the hit-and-run happened on April 18, 2024 at about 9:50 pm on the Trans Canada Highway.

Emergency crews responded and found the girl dead. The suspect vehicle was not found at the scene.

The highway was closed for several hours while investigators gathered evidence.

Police thanked the public for their assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle, after putting a call out for information and dashcam footage.

Mesa’s first court appearance has been set for Oct. 15, 2024.
