A traffic stop in the Squamish area late last month resulted in additional charges against a man who was at the centre of a highly-publicized impaired driving incident last year.
According to the RCMP, 30-year-old Kyle Luca was pulled over for a roadside screening by a patrol officer around 8:30 pm on June 26.
Police did not provide details about the investigation, but said it resulted in Luca being charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operation while over 80 (0.08 BAC) and two counts of breach of a release order.
Luca was already facing several charges in connection to an April 2024 hit and run that saw a mother and baby run over while in a marked downtown Squamish crosswalk.
Police reports at the time explained that the baby was inside a stroller that was dragged for two blocks while lodged in the front of the vehicle, but the infant amazingly survived the incident.
On March 11, 2025, Luca was charged with two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop causing bodily harm and dangerous driving.
Both cases involving Luca are now linked in the BC court registry, but are under a publication ban. He’s expected to appear in North Vancouver court on Wednesday, July 9.
“Impaired driving remains one of the top factors in fatal crashes,” said S/Sgt. Kris Clark. “Frontline officers in Squamish and across BC will continue to target high-risk driving behaviours to keep our roads safe.”
Police advise anyone who suspects that another driver is impaired, or witnesses high-risk driving behaviours, to call 911 immediately from a hands-free device.
