BC government seeking legal advice about banning inter-provincial travel

British Columbia Premier John Horgan has said he is getting further legal advice about barring travel to British Columbia from within Canada.

He said in a press conference this morning that “mobility within Canada” is causing “challenges” for the province.

“We have open borders within Canada,” he said.

“Of course we were first in line back in March to call on the federal government to close our international borders and I think we’ve all benefited from that.”

He added that he and his cabinet will be discussing the matter in the coming days.

“On the surface, it would seem an easy thing to do just to tell people not to come here,” Premier Horgan said.

“That’s not part and parcel of who we are as Canadians. Other premiers have expressed a similar view.”

He said he wanted to “make sure people stay home, stay in place until we get through this” and has appealed to other provincial leaders to “make the same case.”

“But despite that, British Columbians and Canadians are free to travel within the borders of Canada,” he said, adding that he will have more to say about the matter next week.
