Another human foot has washed ashore on a Victoria beach.
The remains were discovered on Gonzales Beach recently. The BC Coroners Service (BCCS) has confirmed that they are in the very early stages of their investigation into the discovery and were not able to share many details.
However, it was noted that this is not an uncommon phenomenon in British Columbia.
Human remains inside shoes have been washing up on shores for years, and in many cases DNA testing has been successfully used to identify the deceased individuals.
The BCCS provided a map of previous incidents they have investigated and were able to identify the deceased individuals.
In 2018, a foot washed up on Gabriola Island — the 14th such occurrence in BC. The foot was inside a hiking boot, lodged in a logjam, and was discovered by a man who was walking along the beach.
There have been multiple cases of detached feet found on the coasts of the Salish Sea, in BC and in Washington.
Most cases were ruled not foul play, and it is assumed that all the remains belonged to people who either died by accident or by suicide.
