There’s been a notable increase in assaults against Vancouver police officers this year.
According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), an incident in the early hours of Monday morning was the 35th time an officer has been assaulted so far in 2025.
Monday was just the 83rd day of the year and those numbers signify a 25% increase over the same timeframe in 2024.
The latest incident to start the week happened around 1 am following a 911 call from a residential building near Clark Drive and East 12th Avenue.
Police responded to the scene after being told about someone reportedly breaking things and threatening to assault people.
The VPD says an officer found the 33-year-old female suspect inside the building and took her into custody, but the assault occurred after her arrest.
Kaitlin Balfour has now been charged with one count each of assaulting a police officer, uttering threats and breaching the conditions of a release order.
She was taken to jail following the incident and remains in custody at this time.
The officer was taken to hospital by ambulance following the assault, but has since been released and is recovering at home.
