Two people on board a boat in the Strait of Georgia had to be rescued by an RCMP vessel this week.
On August 17, RCMP officers were patrolling the marine border when they overheard a distress call on the marine channel.
The individual said that their vessel was sinking and the two people aboard were being forced to abandon ship.
Police said that officers were able to arrive minutes later and located the ship almost fully submerged with the life raft still attached.
The two people were in the water wearing life jackets and were holding onto a few floating items from the boat.
Through investigation it was determined that the boat had struck something as it traversed through Boat Pass and immediately began taking on water.
The captain anchored the sinking ship and attempted to use the life raft, but due to the boat sinking so quickly the system to release it did not function.
The 34 foot boat sank in approximately 40 feet of water and will be recovered in the future.
Fortunately, neither person on board was injured.
