A day of ice fishing ended in tragedy on Tuesday after a pair of men fell through the ice at Grace Lake near Harrison Hot Springs.
Police were notified about their disappearance around 11:15 pm after they had failed to return home and a family member had gone to their location to check on them.
According to the RCMP, the family member noticed a large hole in the ice along with fishing gear, which led them to the belief that the men had fallen through the ice.
Multiple search and rescue (SAR) units joined the RCMP at the scene and were able to locate two bodies beneath the surface.
The RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team (URT) was then called in to execute a “challenging recovery option,” police explained.
“URT is a unique unit of expert divers who train in specialized police diving techniques, including ice diving,” added a release from the RCMP.
“Their skills, along with the support of SAR, was crucial in safely recovering the two bodies and ensuring there were no additional casualties.”
The Agassiz RCMP is investigating the incident alongside the BC Coroners Service, but says criminality is not believed to be a factor in these men’s deaths.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” noted Cpl. Chad Raymond
“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that ice conditions are constantly changing, and even if you’ve tested the thickness, the weather and water conditions can make it unsafe.”
