South Okanagan community mourns the death of the director for rural Oliver

Condolences are pouring in after it was announced that Rick Knodel, Electoral Area “C” director for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), has passed away.

On Tuesday morning, the Willowbrook Volunteer Fire Department announced the passing of Knodel, who was an active member of the department.

Knodel passed due to “health complications.”

“We have never been as fortunate before to have had such a giving and caring supporter of both the fire department, and of his community,” the fire department said in a statement.

“Rick always fought hard for what he believed in and always took the time to ensure the people around him, as well as his constituents were taken care of.”

The RDOS said he was committed to addressing local issues, fostering community and will be deeply missed.

He served as the Electoral “A” director from Oct. 20, 2018 until his passing.

Before that he served one term as an alternate director for the RDOS.

“Rick was a proud and dedicated father and husband,” said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS Chair.

“He was known for his down-to-earth personality and tireless advocacy on behalf of residents, business owners, and agricultural producers. His commitment to sustainable growth, agricultural stewardship, and fiscal responsibility earned him the respect of colleagues, staff, and residents alike.”

The RDOS said that before Knodel entered local government, he worked as a boilermaker.

He grew up in the Oliver area and was an avid motorcycle enthusiast.

“I’m saddened to hear of the loss of Rick Knodel and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this tough time,” said Martin Johansen, Oliver Mayor.

Rick was a genuinely caring person and his use of humour helped make difficult conversations better. I’m going to miss our discussions where we talked at length about local issues and what we could do to make life better for everyone. I considered Rick a great friend and I’m going to miss him dearly.”
