The Okanagan Granfondo event is returning next weekend and will be causing major road closures in Penticton.
The cycling event is happening on Sunday, July 14 and the City of Penticton is reminding all residents to plan ahead for the road closures but is also inviting the community out to the event, which will include free entertainment.
“We look forward to welcoming the cyclists and their supporters to Penticton, who are travelling from near and far to take part in this spectacular ride throughout the South Okanagan,” says Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield.
“We encourage all community members to show the visitors a warm welcome and to showcase to the world what a wonderful place it is here to live and play.”
There will be major road closures along Main Street and Skaha Lake Road from 5 am until 5pm.
The event begins at 6:30 am on Main Street near Lakeshore Drive.
Thousands of cyclists will be travelling through Summerland, Okanagan Falls, Oliver and Kaleden before winding its way back to Penticton.
People travelling around the city on Sunday are encouraged to use Channel Parkway or Government Street wherever possible.
“Avoid crossing Main Street if possible and be aware that some streets, including Lee Avenue, will be closed for overnight parking starting Saturday at midnight,” the city says in a release.
In addition to the Grandfondo event, a road closure will also be required on Lakeshore Drive on Saturday, July 13, from 8:30-10:30 am for the free Kids’ Piccolofondo event.
