UPDATE: IIO investigating after Penticton man dies in RCMP-involved shooting

(UPDATE: Oct. 23 @ 10:30 am) – The provincial police watchdog is investigating after a man died in Penticton Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly before 5 pm, the Penticton RCMP issued a news release telling people to avoid Government Street between Duncan Avenue E and Carmi Avenue.

Details from police were minimal, however, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has said an officer discharged their gun while responding to the incident.

According to the IIO, the RCMP received several calls about a man acting “erratically” and reportedly waving a knife.

Officers attended and an interaction between an officer and the suspect ended with the suspect being shot.

The IIO says the man was provided first aid before being taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Additionally, the officer was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

An investigation into police actions is now underway and no additional information will be released until the IIO finishes its in depth report.
