Penticton high schoolers trying to collect 10,000 food items to help the less fortunate

Students at a pair of Penticton high schools are doing that they can to help the city’s less-fortunate population during the holidays.

Penticton Secondary and Princess Margaret Secondary are once again teaming up this year for an event called 10,000 Tonight.

According to one of the student organizers, Kaiya Forbes, the concept is simple – they’re trying to collect at least 10,000 food items through donations to help those in need this winter.

“Most years we have fortunately been able to collect well over this goal,” said Forbes, noting that the event collected 14,000 food donations one year.

There are donation bins set up at both schools as well as many Penticton grocery stores.

The event will finish up with a food drive on Thursday night and volunteers will be going around town picking up donations from those who are unable to drop them off.

Forbes says every food item collected by students will go to the Salvation Army and the charity will distribute it to those who need it in Penticton.
